Letting Go and Saying No

SB: I’ve given my chaos-corrallin’ partner time off from the blog this month, so I’m going to write about how I see boundaries as an important part of keeping your home organized.

I find that many of my clients feel relieved when I remind them it’s okay to “release” items they no longer like, need, or use. If you find yourself regretting (or feeling guilty) about purchases that, in hindsight, feel excessive or impulsive, I encourage you to be kind to yourself. Learn from your “mistakes” and strive to make more mindful decisions moving forward.

Similarly, you are not obligated to keep every gift you receive. Rather than sitting around collecting dust, it’s better for an unneeded gift to be put to use by someone else via re-gifting, donating, or selling.

Sometimes, (mostly well-intended) friends and family members try to pass off items they don’t want or need. But if you don’t want or need them either, it really is okay to politely decline. Keeping good boundaries around your home environment is a great way to prevent clutter from accumulating in the first place.
