Clutter Bustin’

HR: So this month, we’re talking about “clutter.” What’s your definition?

SB: I think of clutter as items that aren’t in an assigned space within your home. If you don’t maintain allotted spaces for things (and periodically cull extraneous items) they will “spill over” into other places. If that pattern repeats in multiple areas of your home, you’re likely to feel overwhelmed.

HR: So what are some tips?

SB: Here are “6 Small Steps to Reduce and Prevent Clutter”:

  1. Pick your “pain point” (the cluttered space in your home that bothers you the most). It could be a junk drawer, a kitchen pantry, or foyer.

  2. Start small - you don’t have to get rid of all your clutter at once.

  3. Keep the commitment manageable - 10 minutes at a time is a great way to start.

  4. Look for “swap-outs” - when you bring a new item into your home, consider which old item(s) you could donate, sell, or recycle.

  5. Use clear, labeled containers to allocate space – this will also help you find what you’re looking for.

  6. Periodically take an inventory - this will prevent you from inadvertently purchasing duplicates.
